Growth Mindset of Week 2:READING CHALLENGE

For this week, I tried to read other students' posts in two ways. One way is just the holistic reading, which is the default way that everybody reads. The other way is the analytical way. It was very hard to read a story like that because I always be attracted by the story itself. To solve this, I read the story from the end back to the beginning. This way did help me to focus on the elements that I need to analyze.
To sum up, I learnt a new way to read a story through a challenge.

  1. I also wanted to focus on the analytic part of my reading. Previously I have used the method where you read the story starting with the last sentence moving to the first to great effect in proof reading in my own work. I think it helps catch all the little errors.

  2. I also am attracted to the entirety of the story which makes it hard to analyze. Sorry about the second post I forgot to check word count.

  3. Youhao, I just happened to notice this post and you are EXACTLY right. Professional proofreaders do exactly what you describe here: the read the writing from back to front in order to "make it strange," and that way they pay attention and notice things they would not have noticed otherwise. You can feel your brain working harder when you proofread that way... in fact, it can make your brain work so hard that your head might hurt. But it does work! And that is so cool that you discovered this on your own!

    Happy Friday!!!

  4. I have never thought about reading in an analytical way by reading the story backwards. I am also always attracted to the story itself but will apply this and see if it will help me to read analytically.

  5. Wow. I didn't do this growth mindset challenge myself but it does sound really interesting! I think I will have to try this so I can improve on my constructive criticism when commenting on others' stories and blog posts. Thanks!

  6. It’s hard to analyze a story when we’re so used to reading for pleasure for most of our lives. I know I forget to look for specific things when I’m reading if I get too caught up in the story itself. That is an interesting technique to read the story backwards. It disconnects the story so you won’t get as attached and have to make sense of that one paragraph at hand.
